Yes you can pick up some pretty good books from MPH at about $100+ a book. The $30 ones really aren't that great. The "free" alternative is to spend time to google online and in forums. There is great information there, though you have to sieve through it and sometimes you can't ask questions directly face to face - and it is hard for someone to solve a question for you without you have some working knowledge of forex.
